We sat down with César Burguière, the Golf Director to discuss the resort that’s soon to come

There’s something magical, almost fairytale-like about Antognolla Golf Course and things are about to get a lot more exciting as a Six Senses resort will open in 2026. One of the premier places to play 18-holes in the Umbrian mountains, Antognolla boasts sprawling green fairways designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr, as its luxury tripled with history and modern sensibilities. From anywhere on the golf course, a 12th century castle can be seen from the hills.

“What truly sets Antognolla apart is its extraordinary surroundings,” says César Burguière. “Nowhere else in Italy can you play a round of golf under the watchful gaze of a 12th-century castle, that will be soon converted into a Six Senses Hotel. This historical gem, with its ancient frescos in the crypt that dates back nearly a thousand years, serves as the perfect backdrop, offering a sense of grandeur and history that few other courses in the world can match.”

For now, playing golf, dining in the Antognolla restaurant, and shopping at the golf store are just about all you can do. But it’s plenty and fulfilling. You find Americans, Brits, and other Europeans at Antognolla who mostly visit the course because they are on vacation in Italy and did a Google search for golf courses, and decided to venture to this place tucked into the Umbrian hills.

When completed the resort will include a state-of-the-art hotel with rooms and suites spread between the castle and modern hotel that’s being constructed now. On the castle grounds is a church, which will also be restored and its outer courtyard will include a set up for interfaith wedding ceremonies to take place. The crypt below the church has Byzantine-era frescoes on the walls that date back to the 12th century, and it once housed the remains of Ercolano, the patron saint of Perugia. In the hotel being constructed now, there will be rooms, suites, and a state-of-the-art spa.

And for those that don’t like golf there will be something for them recreational-wise like the where people can experience outdoor activities. “Six Senses introduces a wealth of enriching experiences that emphasize sustainable living and holistic wellness. From hiking the estate’s 15 miles of scenic trails to immersing oneself in the fresh local flavors at one of our authentic restaurants. Every moment at Antognolla is designed to nourish both body and soul. Six Senses’ renowned commitment to sustainability ensures that each experience is not only luxurious but also responsible and attuned to the natural rhythms of the land,” explains Burguière.

The resort isn’t just a resort for itself, but rather it will bring together the region and city of Perugia says Burguière. “Senses will bring a renewed sense of prestige and international recognition. The brand’s presence will position Antognolla as one of the foremost sophisticated destinations in Italy, attracting discerning travelers from around the world who seek a sanctuary that harmonizes wellness, culture, and elegant authenticity. This influx of high-end tourism will undoubtedly benefit the local economy, while also preserving the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage,” he says.

Italy is not known for its golf, it’s not the reason why people venture to the country. But the government and golf enthusiasts are trying to change this. In 2019 Antognolla hosted the PGA Championship, and in 2023 the Ryder Cup was held in Rome. “It is crucial for all stakeholders in the industry to work together to engage the local market as Antognolla is doing. By encouraging more Italians to discover and enjoy the sport, we can ensure the development and expansion of golf across the country, fostering a culture that celebrates both the sport and the lifestyle it represents,” continues Burguière.

“At Antognolla, we are driven by a passionate, international team that is committed to excellence at every level. Our dedication goes far beyond providing a luxurious escape, and we aim to create an environment where every moment is steeped in authentic experiences and unmatched service,” says Burguière. We found that personable-ness to be real. The team of international staff are dedicated and passionate to advance the course forward, and Six Senses will bring a lot of positive change to the course and surrounding areas.

“We’re set to become a beacon of luxury and wellness in Italy. The vision of blending contemporary elegance with timeless heritage is what drives us, and we invite all to be part of this extraordinary journey. Whether you're here for the unparalleled golf, the exquisite residences, or the immersive wellness experiences, Antognolla will exceed your every expectation. This is more than a destination; it’s a sanctuary for those who seek the best life has to offer.”
