Shefali Karani explains how to take a brilliant selfie

Taking a selfie may seem like the easiest thing ever, but there’s a ton of work that can go behind that. Influencers take the time to make sure that their selfies are perfect before posting (take it from someone who knows). While celebs and other famous personalities have a whole team to capture that “perfect” selfie, this doesn’t mean that you can’t take a brilliant selfie! Here are a few simple rules when capturing the perfect selfie.

Angle

When you’re taking a selfie, the first thought that may come to your mind is if you look good or not. It’s human nature for us to want to look good all the time but it’s an unrealistic beauty standard that we cannot possibly keep up with. Capture the moment from your best angle. Choose an angle that works for you and that you know you’ll look good in. To get that one perfect selfie can take time and lots of photos as well, so be patient with yourself. Don’t overthink it and keep the best photo out of the few selfies that you do take.

Lighting

Believe it or not, lighting makes a huge difference. If you’re taking a selfie in a dark or poorly lit area, I guarantee you you’re not going to like what you see. If you’re at a place where there’s not much lighting, find another place nearby that does have more light. If this isn’t an option, then try using your camera flash. It may not be the best selfie ever, but at least you got the picture that you wanted.

Clothing and Makeup

You may think that clothing or makeup may not help much for a selfie, but it does. If you’re wearing pjs or a t-shirt with sweatpants, you may feel terrible taking a selfie then. Don’t take a selfie if you’re not feeling confident or up to it! Pictures should serve as wonderful memories, not as moments where you look totally tired or something. Makeup also helps especially if you’re taking a selfie after a cool event.

Following these few simple rules should help in capturing a brilliant selfie that you’ll love, and not just for taking a selfie that you’ll post to share with others. Remember to take a selfie for yourself first and then think about taking a selfie for others. Your own happiness comes first so make yourself a priority when taking a selfie.
