Georges Hobeika Takes A Retro Turn While Nodding To The Beauty Of The Middle Eastern Woman For Their SS24 Collection
Haute Couture Week is in full swing today, and this Lebanese designer threw us all a curveball
At first glance, you can tell there is something sartorially different in the Georges Hobeika spring-summer 2024 collection. There’s something so different that’s its palpable to the retro silhouettes. Right away you see the nod to the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, in the modernism style of the looks. This, we’ve never seen before and we’re liking what Co-Creative Directors, the father-son duo, Georges and Jad Hobeika have created.
Women’s Looks
Men’s Looks
According to collection notes, “this collection is a love letter to the women and the culture which nurtured them, and continue to influence them.” While the collection takes a retro turn, there are influences to the Middle Eastern woman, and creativity of the Arab region. With some of the looks, I felt like I were watching a movie taking place in the 1960s, of scene of a high society party where women are wearing off the shoulder column gowns in red, green, pink, purple, and blue that flow straight downwards and touch the floor.
Also, poignant are the professional looks. What would have been an everyday look in the 60s would pass for a striking office piece today, like the tweed pink shin length column skirt suit with fiery red sleeves. Or, the black skirt suit, almost tuxedo-esque with embroidered white detailed sleeves. Tapestry and rugs are a central inspiration in the collection, on skirts and dresses, with fringe detailing, gives way to movement and shimmer.
If there one’s thing that hasn’t changed on the Georges Hobeika runway, it’s the scintillating sparkle. Sequins and embroidery are aplenty, etched onto gowns, tying in more to the Oriental theme of 1001 Nights, with all the sparkle, and tulle and mousseline gowns. Ready for the red-carpet, many of these looks are Oscar worthy, that would give a woman a Jacqueline Kennedy, when she was First Lady, vibe.
The collection is filled with lots of men’s looks, of tailored yet retro pants suits. But also suits with long baggy blazers.
