If you’ve been to London, you’ve heard of China Tang that’s housed in the Dorchester Hotel, across from Hyde Park. This year marks 20 years for China Tang, and the brand is a staple, and a true cultural icon in the city founded by Sir David Tang. Its Cantonese faire is a favorite of many who hail upon the British capital, but recently the brand opened China Tang in the Harrods dining hall and it’s to-die-for.
As you enter the dining hall, in the back-right corner is Dim Sum by China Tang, the Harrods Art Deco decor is most poignant. You can opt to sit at the bar or in the booth along the wall. What’s most helpful is that the menu isn’t overwhelming. You can choose from a set menu or order a-la-cart from 14 savory and two sweet dim sum variations. But let’s talk about drinks.
There’re only two cocktails and two mocktails to choose from. The Berry Breezy mocktail is fizzy and tasty with a fruity blend of raspberry and strawberry purees with elderflower cordial, shaken and garnished with a mint sprig. Bottled cold brew and hot brew tea are also offered, as well as a selection of wine and spirits.
“We are thrilled to bring Dim Sum by China Tang to Harrods in what marks the beginning of an exciting five-year partnership. It is a significant new chapter for the brand, allowing us to offer guests an elevated dim sum experience in one of the world’s most iconic dining locations,” says Nathalie Ford, VP Europe and Middle East for China Tang in notes. “This collaboration embodies our commitment to partnering with the best of the best, and we are especially grateful to Ford Consultancy for facilitating this deal. We look forward to welcoming both loyal patrons and new diners to experience China Tang in this extraordinary setting.”
Truffle and Shiitake Mushroom Bao- £20
Iberico Pork Siu Long Bao- £17
Examining the menu, my dinner guest and I opted for the truffle and shiitake mushroom bao, the chicken dumplings in spicy sauce, and spring rolls, but we were coaxed by our waiter to add the scallop dumplings topped with caviar and the Iberico pork xiao long bao- all divine. The former is the shape of a mushroom and looks like a mushroom on the outside but is a bun stuffed with mushrooms. With a hint of sweetness, its savory notes excite the taste buds. And the chicken dumplings swim in Cantonese flavors with a hint of spice.
The dim sum is made fresh daily
Dim Sum is ideal as an appetizer, but their WOK items with noodle or rice dishes are most filling. For the vegetarian or vegetarian at heart, the Ma Po Tofu is the best choice paired with Singaporean Vermicelli rice.
Head Chef James Xia has been delighting London with his Cantonese creations for 30 plus years at restaurants like Le Chinois in Knightsbridge. And Chef He, who has been at China Tang since 2019 and is the genius behind all the dim sum creations. “Renowned for his meticulous approach, oversees the creation of the delicate dim sum that is made fresh daily for both the Park Lane restaurant and Harrods,” explains the restaurant in notes.
Dim Sum by China Tang is open Monday through Sunday. Reservations can be made by calling +44 (0)20 3819 8888 or via harrods.com.
