Iris Knobloch has been re-elected by the Board of Directors to be president of the Festival de Cannes for a second three-year term, set to begin January 2025. She has held this position since July 2022, and this new term will run from 2026 until 2028 of the esteemed film festival editions. As the Festival has noted, Knobloch’s leadership term will bring stability and strategic continuation of the festival as a whole.

“I am profoundly honored to once again receive the trust of our Board of Directors,” says Knobloch in announcement notes. “I take great pride in the success of the past two editions and I am excited to continue this journey alongside our General Delegate Thierry Frémaux and our dedicated teams in the years to come. Together, we will continue working hand in hand to nurture and enhance this magnificent Festival, a unique platform where all films, voices, and talent find their place.”

Cementing her place in film, Knobloch worked at Warner Bros. and Time Warner where she held executive positions in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Paris. And she has worked with various dignitaries in the film world, and championed some like Michel Hazanavicius, an artist who won the first French film at the Oscars for Best Picture, after it’s Cannes Film Festival selection.

“For nearly 80 years, the Festival de Cannes and cinema have shared a unique and enduring love story. We will strive to ensure that this exceptional institution remains a beacon for artists and films worldwide,” she says.

Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shared its list of nominated films for the 97th Academy Awards that will take place March 2 in LA. Despite the sad reality of the recent LA fires, the Oscars will carry on. Eight Oscar nominated films, across 17 categories and totaling 31 nominations, were a part of the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez, winner of the 2024 Jury Prize and Best Performance by an Actress Award, leads the way with 13 nominations, a record for a non-English-language film. Sean Baker’s Anora, winner of the Palme d'or at the 77th Festival de Cannes, totals 6 nominations. Coralie Fargeat's The Substance, which won Best Screenplay Award in Cannes, received 5 Oscar nominations. Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice and Gints Zilbalodis’ Flow each received 2 Oscar nominations. Mohammad Rasoulof's The Seed of the Sacred Fig, winner of the Jury Special Prize, received one Oscar nomination, as did Nebojša Slijepcevic's The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, winner of the Short Film Palme d'or, and Magnus Von Horn's The Girl with the Needle.
