Review: JW Marriott Venice

Known as the Isola Delle Rose, the hotel sits on its own private island

Background

A hospital site turned luxury hotel describes the JW Marriott Venice. Marriott decided to turn it into a resort in 2015, as it was abandoned and needed some TLC. It now hosts events and celebrities in town for the renowned Venice Film Festival.

What’s It Like?

You can really get away from the busyness of life at the hotel. Venice island is a very busy place with tourists and residents. The city is often too busy and extremely hot in the summer months so if you need a place to get away, then this is your hotel. The JW allows you to pull in and out of the kinesthetic atmosphere found on Venice island. From the time you step out of the hotel shuttle boat or water taxi you feel you’re some place luxurious and secluded. As you walk into the lobby, you notice the bespoke fragrance. The check in desks allow you to sit, relax, and converse with the hotel staffer checking you in. You can tell the hotel has some age but it’s modern and nicely up-to-date.

Where Is It?

Located on its own island, off of Venice island is the 40-acre resort. A few minutes ride (around 12 to 15 minutes if there aren’t any delays due to weather or traffic) from St. Mark’s Square, the hotel has 360 views of the surrounding area of Venice.

Rooms

There are 226 rooms and suites coming in taupe warm tones that let in plenty of natural sunlight. The rooms and suites are spread out over the property between the main building, four of the JW Retreats (one is the resort’s two-bedroom villa), and the JW rooms. The king deluxe room is spacious and comes with a king bed, sofa, minibar, and bathroom with a soaking tub.

Food and Drink

There are a couple of on-site food options at the resort: from Agli Amici Dopolavoro, Sagra Rooftop, Cucina Pizzeria and 3 bars (Rose Bar, Sagra Rooftop Bar, and the Giardino Grill). Food for the restaurants are locally sourced from the lagoon, making the hotel sustainable in its food creation.

We only experienced the breakfast at Cucina, which is large and all-encompassing. You definitely want to come hungry to Cucina because it’s a buffet with an omelet station, fruit bar, raw veggies, and sliced cold cuts/salmon and anchovies. There’s also a hot food section of breakfast meats, sautéed mixed veggies, potatoes, and other hot items. A table with juices is available and hot drinks are ordered through a waiter.

Leisure

There is a spacious gym with up-to-date equipment. And, two swimming pools. The outdoor pool is a little bit away from the hotel and is perfect for families. It gives the feel of being in an infinity pool and it’s surrounded by lawn chairs on either side. The rooftop pool on the 4th floor was our favorite. For adults only, it’s more like a plunge pool but it overlooks the lagoon. Surrounded by burgundy umbrellas and lawn chairs, it’s possible to order drinks and food by a QR code. It’s quite easy to spend a whole afternoon on the rooftop. There is also a spa onsite.

Verdict stay here if you’re looking for a resort that offers a relaxing, and crowd-free environment in Venice.

Best For their olive tree grove and rose garden.

Don’t Miss the rooftop pool. It’s to die for.

Price starts at $450 for a deluxe king room and go up to $7,500 for the La Residenza Pool Suite per night
