The Paul Smith Pink Melrose Avenue Store in LA Has Reopened
It’s back and better than ever.
This summer I was riding on Melrose Avenue and saw this big pink edifice and knew it was the Paul Smith store. I had initially seen the store in the Netflix film, You People that came out this year, with Lauren London, Eddie Murphy, and Jonah Hill. The pink is unmistakable, adding to the city’s colorful culture and creativity. Not only is it Instagrammable, it’s a place of impeccable British tailoring in the heart of a city that prides itself on its relaxed and laidback style. Now it’s back, newly remodeled, and opened for shopping.
The Paul Smith brand is one of the UK’s top independent design companies. Sir Paul Smith is one of the nicest designers you’ll ever meet, and his infectious zest for life, people, and creativity is a testament to the brightly colored pink building on Melrose Avenue. A brilliant tailor with an eye for the quirkiness of life, Sir Paul Smith grew the brand from a 10 x 10-foot shop in Nottingham, England in 1970 to 130 shops around the world that are in over 60 countries.
Inside you will find dedicated sections for accessories, menswear, and womenswear. As you enter you’ll find a parade of Sunrise Cactuses. They’re also scattered throughout the store. The pastel ombre exhibit is likened to the sky at daybreak and is a contrast to the pink exterior. To tell this structured story the brand partnered with Gufram, an Italian design company.
There’s also a purpose-built lounge tailoring area that’s perfect for those needing something stylish for the awards season. There’s also a VIP fitting room, mirrored after a mid-century lounge with French 1980s postmodern touches. The fitting room has its own garden entrance and lounge area. There’s art, which has been selected by Sir Paul Smith, as well as custom mosaics done in travertine stone by Charlie Sheppard.
In 2005, the store opened and was inspired by Luis Barragán, a well-known architect, who chose the shade of pink that has made the building iconic in the city. “The architect’s optimistic philosophy of color deeply resonated with the designer, and this shade became an enduring symbol of the shop’s spirit,” shares the brand in notes.
The brand encourages people to stop by and shop, or take a photo in front of the famous #PinkWall.
