God our GPS

There have been times when I’m driving with the GPS and I feel it doesn’t know where it’s going, so I decide to take a different route, only to find myself lost or locked into a traffic jam.

God is our global positioning system (GPS), guiding us by way of the Holy Spirit on the destiny altering decisions of life. However, there are times when we think we know better and decide to ignore the directions of our holy GPS, only to find ourselves lost or locked into a traffic jam.

Deciphering His will/direction for you

It’s not always fun standing at those forks in the road of life, not knowing what’s coming next. Even though we know God is our GPS and we’ve decided to trust Him in where He’s guiding us- in those moments when we don’t know what’s coming next or which way to go- can make life frustrating.

Let’s say plugging an address into a GPS is like “deciding to trust God.” Even though you have decided to trust Him you will have moments when you’re tying to decipher His will- to do this or that or go here or there. And, you cry out to God: “God, what should I do?” But you feel that you’re not getting a burning bush moment of where you should be going. And so, you feel frustrated or that God can’t hear you.

But think about receiving direction from God like this… The only time a car GPS will talk to you is when it’s time to make a turn in a certain number of feet, or, when you’ve taken a wrong turn and it says, “rerouting.” When learning to decipher the voice of God, if major red lights haven’t stopped you, (i.e. problems haven’t occurred), which represents the GPS coming on and saying “rerouting”- it means you’re to keep going.

God will only talk when you need to make a spiritual decision.

The GPS doesn’t say: wash the car, turn on the wipers, or lock the doors. We make these decisions based on our senses.

God will speak when it is a destiny altering decision. He’ll send something very obvious to block you, or we won’t have peace to continue, or something will stop the direction we’re going in.

In speaking to a mature woman of faith this week on this topic, she pointed out that sometimes God gives us options in trying to decipher His direction. We may have 1, 2, or 3 choices with green lights with all three choices, and God is saying choose which way you want to go. Or, you may have 2 options with clear red lights in one option and green lights with the other option.

God always has an answer for our dilemmas. Sometimes we need to step back and get a better understanding of how our holy GPS [the Holy Spirit] works. We must always go to that quiet place with the Holy Spirit to receive His peace in how to move forward- even when there are options and we have to choose, or when we make wrong turns and must turn back, we must go before Him and pray. But even if we make a wrong turn He’ll always reroute us if we let Him.

Happy Friday!
