What’s In Your Hand?- Your Calling
To whom much is given, much is required, and that includes our calling and the gifts and talents that come with that calling. Last week I wrote about our jobs, and how the work that we have is a gift from God, placed in our hands for a reason. This week I will talk about our calling.
God maybe asking you: “what are you doing with what’s in your hand when it comes to what I’ve called you to do?” Why should God bless us with more or take us to new levels when we haven’t mastered nurturing the gifts and talents He has given us?
Sometimes we get consumed with what our calling is or should be. But, if we follow Jesus, He will lead us into our calling. Don’t be anxious or consumed. Be easy and seek Him first.
Created With a Purpose
God has created every single person with a purpose to carry out his or her calling. So if you believe that God has created you for a purpose, to make a difference on earth, then that means He has put gifts, talents and spiritual gifts inside of your to carry out that purpose to firstly, glorify Him and secondly, for you to bless others. But how do you find out what your gifts, talents, and spiritual gifts are?
Gifts, Talents, Spiritual Gifts
Everyone has a calling/a purpose, which can be comprised into: gifts, talents, and spiritual gifts. A gift- (i.e. being gifted in a subject like math, science, history); and everyone has a talent (i.e. being talented in a practical subject like sports, music); and spiritual gifts (i.e. prophecy, serving, teaching, exhortation, giving).
Finding Out Your Gifts, Talents, Spiritual Gifts AND Calling/ Purpose?
So, back to the question at hand, how do you find out what your gifts, talents, and spiritual gifts are? Which leads to the larger question, what is my calling/ purpose is?
Some people know from an early age what their calling is, to be painter or a doctor, and they achieve that in adulthood. I didn’t know my calling as child, but I knew in 4th grade that I was gifted in history, and I decided at the age of 9 that I would major in the subject in university, which I did.
And some people don’t find out their calling/ purpose until later in life. But whether you know from an early age or discover later in life your calling, one thing is certain- if you want to have a more fulfilled life where your purpose/ calling is thriving, you need to be walking with God for Him to reveal that deeper question: “what is my calling/ purpose?”
Only your Creator can tell you what He has put you on this earth to do. Only your Creator can give your true identity. So you need to make a constant effort to walk with Him to find out, as well as live a Holy Spirit directed life, so that in every season of your life, you are consistently walking toward your calling/ purpose.
Living out Your Calling with Fulfillment and Consistency
How would you define the calling on your life and your family’s life, and how then would you link it into God’s purpose?
Whatever you’re doing with your gifts, talents, and spiritual gifts they should be kingdom building. A key part of your calling/purpose is being able to balance your gifts, talents, and spiritual gifts. It requires vision to stay the path. It requires resolve, knowing who you are and Whose you are to not venture off the path that God has set for your life.
Proverbs 29:18 states…
When you know Who your life is about and you bring that into every aspect of life and living, then when bumps and bends come on your path, you’re still committed to the path, i.e. to your calling/ purpose.
Be reminded that you were created with a calling/ purpose, and that you’ve been given gifts, talents, and spiritual gifts to fulfill that calling/ purpose. But in order to find out your gifts, talents, and spiritual Gifts which make up your calling/ purpose- you need to walk with God for Him to reveal the full revelation of why He has put you on this earth. You need Him to show you what your path should look like and to guide you to where He’s trying to take you. Sure, you can walk this path without Him but it’s an unfulfilled path where it could have been much richer if He was at the helm guiding you from the beginning.
