Issey Miyake To Open Its Flagship Store At 45 Madison Avenue On May 8th

Plus, a special campaign is launching in conjunction with the opening, featuring the exclusive Shade and Shaded_NY dress and Folding Coat, alongside iconic New York fixtures like an apple, a martini, and a yellow taxi…

On the corner of Madison Avenue at 26th Street, overlooking Madison Square Park will be the new Issey Miyake flagship that will encompass 13,000 square feet, set over two floors of shopping space. This new store sits in the Cass Gilbert designed New York Life Building, with NY architecture firm Solid Objectives Idenburge Liu behind the design.

As clients enter, they will be met with a massive transparent staircase, made from structural glass. What’s also poignant is the character of the Beaux-Arts building that has been highlighted and exposed to stick out. It’s as the brand is calling it, “a balance between industrial rawness and contemporary refinement.” And large windows on three sides of the store will bring in natural light and the energy of Madison Square Park.

“A titanium panel is displayed within the space, a symbol of the enduring friendship between the late Frank Gehry and Issey Miyake,” explains press notes. “In a continued commitment to material circularity, glass wall panels from the recently closed Tribeca flagship have been transformed into tables for accessories and folded items.”

At the back of the store is a gallery space called MADO (meaning window in Japanese), that will hold rotating exhibitions, brand collaborations, and special projects this year. The purpose of MADO is to create deeper connections between the brand’s retails environment and the global art and design community.

Exclusive items from the brand will only be available for the store’s opening, which include the Folding Coat, the Unbound Hat, and the Shade and Shaded_NY (2 pleated dresses, a skirt, and a top) will be available at the store. The special and exclusive campaign images that are related to the city, of a martini, a NYC taxi inspired handbag, and apple will also be available.
