Maria Grazia Chiuri Takes Us Into Her Teenage Diary for Dior’s AW20 Collection

Ever the person that can deeply relate to others, womenswear Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri maps out an atlas of emotions through the prism of her teenage diary for the FW20-21 ready-to-wear collection. Launched in the heart of Paris at the Jardin des Tuileries Bassin de l’octogone, designed in collaboration with the Claire Fontaine collective. Chiuri created the entire collection based on two photos of her mother, which transports her back to her formative years, as if she’s in a laboratory brimming with possibilities of what the future may hold.

With photos of actresses who served as muses for her mother’s couture atelier, as well as Chiuri herself, who used fashion as a way of learning to assert herself, and of rebelling and communicating to others of how she wanted to be perceived. Chiuri also used photos from the past that she revisits with her vision today, which include Germana Marucelli’s studion in Milan, designed by artist Paolo Scheggi; Mila Schön by Ugo Mulas and portraits of Carla Accardi.

Using Christian Dior’s “The Little Dictionary of Fashion,” Chiuri created her own with jeans, as well as the checks that Monsieur Dior was so fond of- as he often said: “I love checks. They can be fancy and simle; elegant and easy; young and always right.” The collection is diverse and so Dior with the pea coat, pleated skirts, little collars with ties, and the colors black and white. A polka dotted scarf from the archives was the basis for a series of dresses in the collection, all with various lengths, looking into the print’s infinite possibilities.
