Held at their usual stronghold, at the Bourse de Commerce was the Fendi Couture show. With screaming fans lined up on either side outside to watch celebrities enter and exit the show, it was probably the most excitement the 14th arrondissement received today. Silver floors, silver walls, and silver seating all tie into Fendi’s Artistic Director Kim Jones’ channeling of Karl Lagerfeld’s futurism. And composer Max Richter created the melodies that tie into the themes of the collection, as Jones wanted the idea of ‘precision and emotion’ in the score.
“In the collection there is a humanism at the heart of this future; there’s the body, the silhouette within the silhouette, the person and the handwork of the couture. The collection is about structure and decoration, where the two become indivisible. I wanted an idea of precision and emotion at once.”
Just looking at the show upon first glance and taking in the tones and stylistic codes, the first thing that comes to mind is that it’s one of practicality. For Jones poetry and reality comes alive as he embraces pragmatism. Because it’s a spring-summer collection, the textiles are light, like with the use of silk gazar. But there are hints of heavier materials like cashmere and vicuna yarns for the rib knit dresses. Another aspect of the collection is that the look moves with the body, in the feather-like and fringe influences.
The accessories in the collection were well-thought-out too. Delfina Delettrez Fendi, the brand’s Artistic Director of Jewelry delved into eyewear, using facial scans to incorporate 18k white gold and white diamonds onto sunglasses. And the Baguette bag, lined with mink and made from supple crocodile, created handbag excellence, thought up by Silvia Venturini Fendi. Fendi is truly a family affair.
