There are hotels and then there are hotels, and the Philipp Plein Hotel is the latter, meaning it may be a hotel but it’s not just any hotel. To be honest, the hotel far exceeded my expectations. For the past two years, during Milan Fashion Week I have attended the Philipp Plein runway show at the hotel. And, I had a tour of the hotel in 2024 with Mr. Plein. I was fascinated with the property because if you’ve been, the design is impressive. Mr. Plein has left no stone unturned.

Every inch and corner of the hotel has come under his optical scrutiny. As you peruse through the hotel you discover his heart and soul in the details from the marble chosen, to the tables, chairs, color themes, and more. Even in 2024 when I toured the property, I could see it would be some place special.

With all of these visits, I still did not anticipate a stay at the hotel to, as Americans say, “blow my socks off.” But off they are and it’s all for one reason: the hospitality of hotel staff. Every person I came into contact with during my stay from the doorman to reception, restaurant staff, housekeeping, and anyone else was beyond kind and eager to serve. But, my 2024 tour with Mr. Plein came rushing back. He took personally took media around his hotel, talking about the details of how he designed the property. He didn’t leave it to a PR or a press release to describe his vision, he did it himself because I suspect under the celebrity, the glitz, the glam, and the controversy surrounding his life, he is a personable and hospitable man with a keen eye for detail, details that he wants to share with the world.

THE REVIEW

Background

The hotel officially opened in 2025, as s different kind of hospitality that the name Philipp Plein is known for in the fashion world. Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it’s contemporary design and grandeur makes the hotel stick out. The hotel is a unique product with five exclusive formats of careful planning and design that took three dedicated years.

Where Is It?

The hotel is located in Milan’s city center, a 7-minute walk from the Republic Metro and train station, a 15-minute walk to the Duomo, a 12-minute walk to the La Scala Theater, 1.1 miles from the Sforzesco Castle, and 5 miles from Linate Airport (30 minutes via public transport). Several tram lines are in super close walking distance to the hotel as well. You can reach much of Milan on foot from the hotel.

What’s It Like?

Designed and conceptualized by Mr. Plein himself, the hotel is maximalist with pops of color and marble all over the hotel. It’s contemporary yet classic in style, with bold design and bold dining options. Every room is meticulously designed with a masculine aesthetic of mostly dark colors, except for the lobby, which is all white and La Jungle de Plein, which is covered in pink and green color palette. It’s not your traditional luxury hotel design.

Rooms

There are 11 rooms and suites so it’s really a boutique hotel. Set over three floors, the stairwell for each floor includes photos of the Philipp Plein fashion house. No room is the same. Some rooms have a masculine touch, while others are feminine in design. Floors are parquet and bathrooms are marbled.

The Spa Deluxe Suite | Photo Provided by: The Plein Hotel

We stayed in a Spa Deluxe Suite on the third floor, which is affectionally known as the Penthouse. The room has its own elevator, which is worked by inserting a code. As soon as you enter you’ll be taken by the array of windows that surround two walls of the bedroom, and are dressed with emerald green floor to ceiling drapes. Light rushes into the room on a sunny day making the dark tones from the black wallpaper feel totally different in the day than the night.

A Queen-sized emerald green bed with headboard that reaches to the ceiling sits in the back center of room. It sleeps comfortably- too comfortably that you won’t want to leave the room. In fact, when staying in this room, it’s best to have a mindset to enjoy it without leaving the hotel. Consider a stay at the Plein Hotel as a weekend staycation getaway.

At the base of the bed is a shiny black soaking bathtub with gold accent around the tub. This suite comes with a butler who can bring you scented bath salts at any time. Beyond the tub is the sitting area with a sizeable emerald chesterfield sofa and matching one-seater chair. Behind the sofa is a large screen smart television with access to streaming apps, so you have the possibility of making it a movie night in. A large cabinet houses the minibar that’s filled with snacks, a bottle of wine, and a fridge that’s stocked with a hotel minibar rarity: a bottle of Dom Perignon.

There is a sauna in the suite as well that you can set or your butler can turn on and set it for you. When we say, just decided to not leave the suite for a weekend, we mean it. To get your money’s worth, every inch of the room will keep you occupied. There is also a small walk in closet space where the LavAzza coffee station is. And then there’s the bathroom. Covered in marble, it’s sizeable with a walk-in shower that changes light colors.

The American Breakfast | Photo Credit: SEELE

Breakfast is offered each morning from 7:30am until 11:30am in La Jungle de Plein. It’s a place where you can indulge in its bold colors- there’s a lot of pink and bold flavors. Open every day from 8am to 10pm, breakfast includes a la carte items of pastries, eggs, or fresh fruit choices. Try the American Breakfast. It may seem like a lot but it’s not. It includes a choice of eggs (of your preferred style, yogurt, fruit salad, fresh juice, coffee, toast with a selection of jams, and a pastry). If you choose the croissant, you can choose to have chocolate or jam inserted. As it’s summer, we dined in the courtyard for dinner as the summer temperature is better in the evening.

For the dinner menu, you must start off with Pink Panther cocktail of spumante, and lychee and peach puree. It’s refreshing and will be unexpected on the taste buds. The burrata antipasti is rich in flavor with cherry tomatoes. And, we opted for the lasagna for the main course. Heavily layered and filled with meat sauce and béchamel, it’s not your typical lasagna but it’s really good. The only dessert that there was room for was a cappuccino and a scoop of mango-raspberry gelato, a light option compared to the Tagliata di Frutta, Monoporzione, Tiramisù, or the Piccola Pasticceria.

Sakura Bā, also designed by Mr. Plein is dark and dreamy, yet inviting. Start off with a classic cocktail or a Japanese inspired cocktail and pair it with edamame or a miso soup. On the menu you will find signature sushi rolls like the California Roll as well as an array of sashimi options. And there’s unique Plein dishes offered as well. The Pineapple dessert comes with a full pineapple with cut up and glazed pineapple pieces inside. It’s a light tasty option.

Meetings

Philipps’s Club & Restaurant, Sukaru Bā, and Jungle de Plein can all be rented out for fashion events, private parties, birthdays, anniversary celebration, or corporate gatherings.

Leisure

There is no gym on site, but include a mirrored gym wall filled with dumbbells, bands, and a mat to do exercises in your room or suite. There is no pool on site but some suites come with a sauna. Philipps Club includes dinner shows with the club open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:30pm to 4am.

Verdict

Verdict don’t ask, stay here.

Best For having a sauna and soaking bathtub in some rooms.

Don’t Miss dining at Sakura Bā and enjoying the live entertainment at Philipps’s next door.
