From Fashion to Geological Abstractionism, Wallace Woo To Open His Second Exhibition Ridge In Paris
Pushing back against AI taking control of art, Woo is asking what will remain human…
From November 6-8th, Wallace Woo will be opening his second solo exhibition in Paris, titled RIDGE. This exhibition will answer the question: what remains of the artist when technique is set aside? Whereas with his first exhibition, Stalactite introduced his theoretical framework of Geological Abstractionism.
This exhibit is a sort of push back against the AI driven world that we live in today. Images can be created in seconds but Woo is concerned about the human created art, specifically the interior world of the artist. Speed or perfection are not Woo’s drivers. It’s the memories, contradictions, desires, fears, and experiences of the artist that concern him.
In this exhibition, Woo wants to know: when control vanishes—when creation is no longer uniquely human—can awareness still hold?
Woo, from Hong Kong, is a trained hair and makeup stylist. He spent years focusing on surface level art, getting celebrities red carpet and fashion week ready. Also, a fashion editor, he spent many seasons sitting front row, covering the latest trends from heritage luxury brands. These days, he’s captivated by what lies beneath surface level art.
Woo has moved away from the geological approach to fashion, where aspects are controlled, where a brand revisits its archive to reinterprets a silhouette from the past, or a brand dismantles and reassembles garments into new forms. His art isn’t controlled. He allows pigments to sediment naturally through gravity and time. "My work is about how the body meets time. Both are negotiations with forces we cannot fully control," he explains in announcement notes.
RIDGE is being presented at time when AI is drastically shaping creative conservations. Woo is joining the conversation too and asking if making images is still an important part of life.
After RIDGE will be AFTERALIVES, an extension of RIDGE, focusing on love, asking the question: can love survive death?
