Companies are investing in high-quality images that elevate both personal presence and employer branding
Who knew that the professional headshot industry is as big as it is. Most of us have never looked into it, but due to the rise of personal branding, and a demand for clear quality imagery, it’s no surprise. The professional headshot photography market is currently valued at $1.2 billion and due to increase to $2 billion by 2033, according to LinkedIn. That’s a 7.5% compound annual growth rate over the next 8 years.
Why AI Headshots and Selfies Don’t Work
Professionals and companies realize the value of carefully curated images, and how the headshot provides credibility and brand cohesion. LinkedIn is still the go-to site for how Americans do business, from connecting to recruiting, which is why there are those who advocate for the right headshots.
According to new insights from Shootday, a new wave of interest in professional LinkedIn headshots is reshaping US corporate culture. Shootday is a content creation platform that connects brands and businesses with vetted professional photographers and videographers, they also corporate headshots, event content, and product shoots.
“In the US, we’re seeing a big shift in how professionals and businesses present themselves online,” says Serge Bejjani, Co-Founder of Shootday. “Your people are your brand, and a sharp, high-quality LinkedIn headshot is often the first thing clients, investors, and partners see.” The saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and the way that Bejjani sees it: your LinkedIn photo is your first handshake.
“While AI-generated headshots might look impressive at first glance, they often lack the real-world authenticity that people actually connect with. A photo taken by a pro, someone who understands lighting, tone, and branding, always wins,” explains Bejjani.
Hiring Decisions Are Influenced By One’s Profile Photo
In Germany, it’s common to put your photo in the top corner of your curriculum vitae (CV). In fact, it’s a must in order to get a job. When I lived there I got accustomed to putting my photo on my CV, but when I moved back to the U.S., after three years in Berlin, I was advised by my undergraduate career center to remove it. The reason was being judged for my race, before getting an interview could be the culprit. So, I removed my photo from my resume. But almost 10 years later, in this savvy digital and social media world, people are looked up and researched all over the world before a company, a potential dating partner, or whatever the entity chooses to collaborate with someone. We can’t get away from being looked up, and having the best images is key.
As LinkedIn surpasses 220 million users in North America in 2025, more hiring decisions are being influenced by profile photos than ever before. A 2024 report from StandOutCV found that profiles with professional photos get 21x more views and 36x more messages, solidifying the value of image-first personal branding. And while AI-generated headshots may trend on TikTok, concerns over authenticity and over-editing are pushing companies to book real-life, on-site shoots that actually reflect the people behind the profiles.
Why Headshots Matter in 2025
People Trust Faces
A clean, professional image builds trust faster than your job title or resume ever could.
It’s a Branding Asset
Consistent headshots across employee profiles signal professionalism and strengthen employer brand recognition.
Easy ROI
Better headshots lead to more profile clicks, stronger outreach response, and improved team presentation online.
It Pays Off
LinkedIn’s internal data shows profiles with professional headshots receive up to 14x more views.
So How Can You Get A Better Headshot
Choose Neutral Backgrounds
Whether outdoors in natural light or against a simple wall, keep it distraction-free so you stay the focus.
Dress on Brand
Wear clothing that reflects your role, industry, or company colors: professional but authentically you.
Skip the AI Filters
Avoid over-editing. Real headshots taken by a pro are easier to trust, and look better across platforms and print.
Smile Naturally
Approachability matters. A confident, relaxed smile often feels more genuine than a stoic pose.
Standardize Across Teams
If you're managing a company page, unified lighting and framing across staff portraits make a strong brand statement.
“From entry-level hires to freelancers, everyone wants their online presence to reflect their real selves,” says Bajjani. So, companies organize on-site shoots for staff, or someone can opt to arrange their own headshot shoot. Either way, it’s an investment to have the right self-advertisement on a platform like LinkedIn.
