Costume Art, the Book Launches Today

While the Met Gala happened last month, the coffee table book of this year’s gala theme Costume Art, published by Yale University Press launched today. It’s the perfect book that accompanies the exhibition going on at The Met, that’s running from May 10 – January 10, 2027…

This book is under direction by Andrew Bolton, the Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with an introduction by art and design scholar Llewellyn Negrin and an epilogue by award-winning author Andrew Solomon dives into how fashion elevates our bodies in unique ways. Essays from these writers delve into how the body shapes the way we dress, contributing to the ways in which we understand ourselves and others. Clothes in essence is how we express ourselves artistically, something that’s central to human life. Tapping into this concept are contributions by Ayaka Iida, Samar Hejazi, Stephanie Kramer, Miriam Peterson, Nathan Rich, Julie Wolfe, and Tracy Yoshimura.

Photography by Paul Westlake of the likes of Madame Grès, Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, and Madeleine Vionnet show how the human form inspires fashion design. What’s fascinating about the book is that it heavily touches on visual art, not just fashion, showing how historical fashion takes inspiration from enameled decorative figures, canvasses, Greek molded cuirass armor, and carved Roman sculptures.
