THE REVIEW

Background

As you walk through the hotel, you’ll notice its 18th century charm. Built in 1769, it’s a historic property and Grade II listed. Its walls have seen history pass by and has been many things other than a hotel, like an apartment building, a private residence, and it was once a cinema. But, in 2002 it was updated and personalized to fit the description of a luxury hotel. Thankfully, in its transformation into becoming a hotel, architects and designers kept unique touches like uniquely shaped rooms.

Where Is It?

Positioned in Mayfair, directly across from Marble Arch with Royal Hyde Park in the background, it’s one of those hotels where you’ve passed a thousand times if you live in or know London, but maybe quite can’t place in your mind. But, once you arrive, you’ve known the location all along.

What’s It Like?

Superb hospitality is what the hotel is like. From the time that you walk in to the time that you check out, you’re going to be greeted with warm British hospitality. Every doorman that we encountered was kind, chatty, and welcoming with big smiles. The lobby is quaint yet bright with a cream color palette, and you will find the hotel’s unique purple-lilac tones throughout the hotel.

Rooms

There are 152 rooms (28 are suites). Suites come with personal thermostats, flat screen TVs, and turndown service. And every room comes with a Nespresso coffee machine, hair dryer, safe, spacious closets, and the fluffiest of towels. The light color palette in the lobby flows into rooms with light colored walls and drapes, which makes rooms feel larger and inviting.

Executive rooms are spacious and provide a little more oomph than a standard room. They also come with Executive Lounge access. Our room offered stunning views of Marble Arch and the Park. Marble Arch is a happening part of London with lots of energy, but the room feels tucked in from urban sounds, allowing you to truly relax and rest.

Every part of the room felt well curated and as though someone really took care to create a rich ambience. The art is well placed and makes the room come alive. Can we talk about the rich purple-lilac and velvet-like sofa? Jokingly, if the sofa would have fit into my suitcase, the hotel would be minus a sofa right now. There is a large flat screen television where a family can crowd around and unwind together. The living room is spacious, regal in many ways with the wainscoting and crown molding detailing.

There is also a work desk to the side of the living room, which allows for separate space to work without being distracted by the TV, if others are in the room. The bedroom, ugh. Amazing. The 330 thread-count sheets truly make it possible to dive into authentic rest. There’s also a second television in the room, making cozying up to a good movie or show possible while in bed.

Oh, and the bathroom. Like, it’s possible to just spend hours in there alone. Marriott and the hotel owner really spared no expense with the design of the hotel. The black and white arabescato marble bathroom makes the bathroom feel larger, though it already is a good size. It’s the bright lighting and the marble that changes the mood of the room. And, there is a TOTO WASHLET® toilet. One word for the toilet alone: sublime. The deep soaking tub ejects water in a cool way makes the best bubble baths. The shower is also spacious, and the Penhaligon’s Halfeti soap, and hair products smell divine.

Leisure

Open 24/7, the Fitness Center is below ground and situated next to the indoor pool. What’s nice about the pool and fitness center is that guests do use them, but they are not overcrowded. Inside is cardio equipment, free weights, and strength equipment. The pool is open every day from 6am to 11pm. It’s spacious with lounge chairs, and has a sizable shower, with the steam room set to the side.

Verdict

You must stay here. It’s not even a question. What’s most important is that you feel welcomed and cared for by staff. The rooms allow you to truly unwind and relax from the busyness of life and fast paced energy of London. And the pool and Executive Lounge are fun amenities that add personality to the hotel.

Best For the Executive Lounge that keeps you fed and hydrated throughout the day.

Don’t Miss the indoor pool, it’s amazing for relaxing… the steam room too.
