It’s sweet, it’s fruity, like really fruity, but there’s an independent kick to it

If I’m honest, this is my favorite Miss Dior rendition, and probably my favorite fragrance of the year. I’m impressed by how Francis Kurkdjian, Dior’s Perfume Creation Director how infused all the notes into a workable and sensible fragrance. The blackberry just hits in all the right places.

The original Miss Dior is a sweet fragrance. Created as an ode to Christian Dior’s sister Catherine, who was also his muse, it is meant to be feminine and delicate. Having her own struggles in life, Catherine, a fierce patriot for France joined the French Resistance during WWII, but was captured and tortured by the Nazis. Upon returning to Paris after the war, she became a florist. For both Catherine and her brother, flowers were nostalgic and a reminder of happier times, as well as the most important woman in their lives.  Miss Dior takes a nod from Mr. Dior’s mother’s garden, that was known to be filled with flowers. He made Lily of the Valley a front-and-center note, which he called his “good luck” flower.

So, it’s no wonder that Francis Kurkdjian tapped into the heart and soul of Miss Dior with Miss Dior Essence. “Its seductive charm touches the heart and reconnects with its origins, in a reminder that it was born at 30, Montaigne to celebrate a return to triumphant femininity after the difficult war years,” explains the House in announcement notes. “It is an essence that still corresponds to the soul of Catherine Dior, the adored, courageous sister of Christian Dior who inspired the scent.”

You know when I wrote above that Miss Dior Essence has an “independent kick?” That’s because as the House notes, it was crafted with the idea to draw out a woman’s audacious and triumphant spirit.

“My Miss Dior is rather like contemporary girls… intense and concentrated, it leaves a vivid, addictive scent behind that is hyper-feminine, but also refuses anything that might hinder freedom. In its concentrated Miss Dior Essence version, the fragrance holds up an olfactory mirror to confident femininity,” says Kurkdjian in notes.

Its olfactory notes include a blackberry and elderflower accord that offers a freshness to the fragrance; while Jasmine, which has been a part of the fragrance since 1947 is its heart note; and oak notes lie at its base providing that intensity (or independent kick) and lingering trail of soft sensuality. “This sensual, woody nectar with a rich color melt on the skin and is deeply devoted to impetuous youth that refuses to be morose,” says Kurkdjian.

Miss Dior Essence will be available at all Dior boutiques from September 1st.
