· Giorgio Armani and Valentino are officially the luckiest designers to wear to the Academy Awards.

The 98th Academy Awards will take place March 15th and will Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” that has 16 nominations that includes Best Picture, or Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” with 13 nominations take home the most Oscar wins? We shall see. But wel all know that many watch the Oscars red carpet to see who is wearing what?

In this new study conducted by clothing label experts Super Label Store, they have found that certain colors tend to produce Oscar winners. They analyzed every dress or outfit worn by each winner of a ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Academy Award in recorded history, to establish whether the color and designer of a dress can affect the chances of taking home a coveted Oscar.

The luckiest colors to wear at the Academy Awards

As Hollywood’s biggest night approaches, all eyes turn not just to the winners, but to the fashion moments that define the red carpet. Our research shows that nearly a third of all Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress winners have worn black when accepting their Oscars since the ceremony began in 1929.

The color has long been synonymous with elegance and confidence, and its dominance on the Academy Awards stage shows just how enduring that appeal is. But while lack may be the most worn color in Oscar history, modern trends tell a different story.

In the 21st century, gold leads at 18%, with white close behind at 16%, signaling a shift toward brighter, more statement-making choices on the red carpet.

The data suggests that pairing a classic black gown with a designer such as Armani or Valentino could still be a strong winning formula, offering both timeless sophistication and, statistically speaking, a competitive edge on Hollywood’s biggest night.

The research revealed that black is the luckiest color to wear to the Academy Awards. Wearing black could increase the chances of winning an Oscar by almost a third, as 30% of ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category winners have dressed in black to accept their awards in history.

Noteworthy examples include Cher's iconic sheer 1988 Bob Mackie gown and Frances McDormand's 2021 black Valentino dress.

Gold and white are the second luckiest colors to wear, as 13% of female winners in recorded history wore a variation of the colors. Most notably, Audrey Hepburn famously referred to the white Givenchy gown adapted from her Roman Holiday costume that she wore to collect her first ‘Best Actress’ award in 1954 as her “lucky dress.”

And gold is also currently the luckiest color to wear to the Academy Awards in the 21st century, with 18% of leading female winners wearing gold as opposed to 12% choosing black. For instance, recent success stories include Emma Stone, who took home the ‘Best Actress’ award for La La Land in 2017 while dressed in a gold Givenchy Haute Couture design.

With 11% of winners wearing the color, the third-luckiest color to wear to the Academy Awards is blue. Most recently, Da'Vine Joy Randolph wore a light blue Louis Vuitton gown when she won Best Supporting Actress at the 2024 ceremony.

Green ranks fourth among the luckiest Oscar dress colors, worn by 9% of past winners – including Emma Stone’s green Louis Vuitton mermaid gown in 2024. Pink follows in fifth place at 6%, most recently worn by Mikey Madison when she took home her statuette last year in a pink Dior dress.

The research also revealed the luckiest fashion designers to wear to the Oscars. Giorgio Armani and Valentino share the crown as the joint luckiest fashion houses, with 6.5% of Oscar winners in history having worn Armani and Valentino while collecting their Academy Awards.

The 92nd Academy Awards was an especially lucky year to wear Giorgio Armani, with both female winners in an acting category wearing Armani on the red carpet. Winner of ‘Best Actress’ Renée Zellweger wore an Armani Privé white one-shouldered gown, while Laura Dern, winner of ‘Best Supporting Actress,’ wore a pink Armani satin dress with a tasseled black upper.

In recent years, Frances McDormand has won two ‘Best Actress’ Oscars while wearing Valentino, while Cate Blanchett also won her first Academy Award sporting the Italian fashion house. The most recent example is 2022’s winner Ariana DeBose, who won her ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Oscar for West Side Story while dressed in Valentino.

Christian Dior ranks as the second-luckiest designer at the Academy Awards, with 5.6% of past winners taking home a statuette while wearing the fashion house. Last year, Mikey Madison won her first ‘Best Actress’ award in a Dior gown, while Michelle Yeoh secured her first ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Oscar in Dior in 2023.

With 3.7% of past winners choosing its designs, Yves Saint Laurent places third among the luckiest Oscar fashion houses. Zoe Saldaña won ‘Best Supporting Actress’ last year in a burgundy YSL gown, while Kate Winslet previously wore the label for her ‘Best Actress’ win for The Reader in 2009.

Fashion designers such as Chanel, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton all also rank as lucky designers to wear to the Academy Awards, with 2.8% each of winning ladies wearing their dresses to collect Oscars.
